Amazon will open its first physical book shop in Seattle, America.

Selling Amazon bestsellers, the stand-alone store will display all titles front facing and sell the books at the same price as they are sold on Amazon.com.

Kindles and Fire TV will also be available to buy and try out in store. The retail giant calls the bookshop a 'physical extension' of its online business.

'We've applied 20 years of online bookselling experience to build a store that integrates the benefits of offline and online book shopping,' says Amazon vice-president Jennifer Cast.

No plans to open other stores in the US or UK have been confirmed. Rival Waterstones has criticised Amazon's move, highlighting the lack of titles and variety of genres and books sold in Amazon's shop compared to Waterstones' own stores and independent bookshops.

Amazon's book shop will sell just 5,000 titles, selected according to Amazon's online customer ratings, sales and pre-orders and reader reviews.

'In a space in which Waterstones would put over 10 times that number, it appears to be a tentative dip of the toe into physical bookselling waters,' says Waterstones' managing director James Daunt.

'Clearly, however, a skim of the bestsellers away from true bookshops would be very damaging: we very much hope that it falls flat on its face,' Daunt adds.

Talking to The Bookseller, the trade magazine for book retailers, other independent sellers echo Daunt's views. Emma Corfield-Walters from Bookish in Crickhowell, says she would be 'horrified' if an Amazon book store opened in London:

'I don't know if it would wipe out small town bookshops, but certainly bookshops in big cities.'

While Henry Layte, from the Book Hive, Norwich, calls Amazon's move 'inevitable' but 'depressing'.

Helen Stanton from Forum Books in Northumberland, however describes Amazon's move as flattering:

'We're doing something right as independents. That the big corporations are doing what I'm doing - it's not quite reassuring but it's almost [proof] that you're on the right lines.'

Publishers have also welcomed the move, believing it affirms the bricks and mortar experience of browsing books is still important - if not the preferred way of buying books - for customers.
